Then, the ignition system could work in with the fuel system to make the engine work. Thus, we can say, the spark plug to a large extent, determines how well the the engine functions.

SPARK PLUG SELECTION
Spark plug, particularly the nose of a spark plug, is subjected to extremely high thermodynamic loads in an environment where oil, lead and carbon foulings are present.
In order that a spark plug might properly perform its function in an engine it must be designed so that its nose always remains within correct heat ragne, regardless motoring conditions, thus securing correct self-cleaning (burning off the fouling depositss) but not causing self-ignition (sparkless ignition).
In order to satisfy the above conditions, our designers cooperate with engine designers and accomodate the spark plug construction to suit the engine requirements, particularly regarding the thermal loads, which ultimately results that each engine type has its 'own' spark plug, regarding the heat value and other design parameters, from the extensive choice of IRIDIUM spark plugs.
Consequently, when selecting or replacing spark plugs it is most important to pay attention to the heat value, thread diameter and length and seat type
If your engine is factory fitted with IRIDIUM spark plugs, you cannot go wrong if you as your dealer for the identical spark plugs. But if your engine is titted with spark plugs of another manufacturer, the proper thing to do is to select your spark plugs in our Catalog.

GAP ADJUSTMENT Of IK20 Spark Plug
The gap between the central and earth electrodes is an important factor for correct engine running as regards both, the loading, and the economy of the engine.
Incorrect settings of the gap can result in misfiring, engine power loss, fouling of the electrodes, etc. Becouse of the electro-chemical erosion, which is a normal development durning the operation, the spark plug gap should therefore be periodically checked and reset, if necessary, by bending the earth electrode only.
Such adjustments are limited by the basic geometry of the electrodes, so it is suggested that the spark plugs be replaced by new ones after 12.000 to 12.000km in case of fourstroke engines, or after 6.000 to 8.000km with two-stroke engines if full performance of the engine is to be maintained.
Recommended Torque and Tightening Angle for DENSO plugs
1.Use the correct wrench for the hex on the plug, and be careful not to damage the insulator.
2.When changing, make sure that the oil, etc. on the outside of the plug does not enter the engine interior.
3.When putting the plugs in, clean the engine side of the flange, and put in the plugs after making sure the gasket is in the flange.
4.Make sure the plugs are vertical, and tighten them by hand until they cannot be tightened any further.
5.Then, use a plug wrench to tighten them accurately to the torque or rotation angle showed in the chart below.

Considerations When Using Nitrous Oxide
1.Try to avoid platinum (particularly double platinum) plugs.
2.Try to find a plug with a short ground electrode.
3.Try to find a 'non projected' plug.
4.Use a non resistor or Iridium type plug if available.
5.Use a colder heat range plug.
6.Learn by the mistakes of others.

Q2. My engine has been tuned/modified, do I need a colder/hotter plug?
You should consult your engine tuner who should be able to advise you on the correct heat range to get the best from your engine. As a general rule, an engine may benefit from a colder grade of plug where modifications made have increased the temperature in the combustion chamber (increased turbo boost, nitrous oxide use, increased compression, ignition timing adjustments), a colder plug will conduct heat away from the firing tip more quickly and thus help reduce detonation/plug damage.
Q3. Will I get a noticeable power increase if I replace my standard plugs with Iridium plugs?
Increases are dependant on the type and state of the current plugs, number of cylinders, cylinder capacity and a host of other details. The biggest increases seem to be from large engined vehicles with a large number of cylinders (eg 3.0L V6 and above). Having said that, any improvement on a small engined vehicle will be more noticeable. Please refer to our Iridium spark plugs page for further information. If you are currently using very old/worn or incorrect spark plugs then replacing with a new set will almost always produce a noticeable increase in performance.
